Surface Modification & Protective Coatings




As an integral part of a multi-disciplined team, you will be responsible for supporting new technology roadmap development and leading its implementation to support the innovation portfolio. New technology and product platform development in the area of surface modification and protective coating development supporting automotive and consumer electronics will be the target area of focus to drive acceleration of new business growth. This is a hands-on position where most of the scientist’s time will be spent in the company’s laboratories and will include leadership of a small team.

Your Tasks:

Lead R&D efforts in the design and development of high performance surface modification technologies and protective formulated coatings
Research and develop novel material, synthetic routes, and formulation and application techniques for new surface protective coating technologies
Create, formulate and reformulate custom coating formulations from basic materials to meet specific customer requirements
Characterise formulations, track solution properties and develop correlations between solution properties and coating properties/quality
Work closely with other members of the R&D group to ensure new products meet the needs of the marketplace in terms of application and quality
Develop applications for new products and technologies
Lead technical support and trouble-shooting investigations in cooperation with the Technical Dept. to support customer and product needs
Maintain detailed, accurate, legible records of all experiments, and graph all relevant trend data along with the appropriate controls and blanks
Supervise, manage and assign work to staff research associates and technicians as required for research programs internally and externally as appropriate
Work with R&D, Sales and Marketing to launch and promote new methods and products to the scientific community
Provide support to Marketing on brochures, web, technical and seminar content
Manage and develop external relationships with academic institutes and external partner companies
Scale-up and transferring of formulation syntheses from bench to reactor scale.

Your Profile:

Diploma/Ph.D. in Chemistry or Material Sciences
Research experience in surface modification and protective coatings, ideally with extensive experience in the synthesis, formulation and performance evaluation of silicones and organic coating systems
Strong practical understanding of correlating structure to performance properties and requirements
Knowledge of markets and application for conformal and protective coatings desired, particularly for the automotive and consumer electronics markets
